12:40 PM - 1:30 PM
Warnell Forestry Resources 1, Room 0304

Please join the EHS Department for Dr. Coker’s seminar, Methodological Frontiers: Big Data, Machine Learning, and GIS in Environmental Health, on Wednesday from 12:40–1:30 PM in Warnell Forestry Resources 1, Room 0304.

Dr. Eric Coker is a Senior Scientist in Environmental Health Services at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia and the University of Florida. Dr. Coker has specialized training and expertise in environmental epidemiology, exposure science, and global health. Much of Dr. Coker’s research focuses on children’s environmental health, examining the health effects of air pollution and exposure to various environmental and social stressors. This line of research is driven by his strong interest in addressing health disparities caused by environmental and social inequalities. Dr. Coker’s current research portfolio uses data science and geospatial methods to estimate population exposure to and health effects of ambient and household air pollution, including wildfire smoke and other extreme weather hazards.

Dr. Coker earned his Ph.D. in Public Health from Oregon State University, with a focus on Environmental and Occupational Health Science. He also has an MS in Global Health Science from the University of California, San Francisco, and an MS in Occupational and Environmental Health Exposure Science from the University of Washington. He completed postdoctoral training in maternal-child health epidemiology and global health at the University of California, Berkeley.

Before working in his current role at the BCCDC, Dr. Coker served as an assistant professor at the University of Florida in the Department of Environmental and Global Health and previously worked as an environmental epidemiologist for the New Mexico Department of Health.
