Global Health Seminar Fall Series – The Last Mile of Global Polio Eradication: Lessons and Challenges
Guest Speaker: Mohamed Gedi Qayad, MD, MSc, MPH, MSPH, PhD
Dr. Qayad is a physician with training in community medicine, public health, epidemiology and biostatistics. He has over 35 years of diverse expertise in public health work including expanded program on immunization (EPI), maternal and child health, reproductive health, community survey design and analysis, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDs and teaching and managing field epidemiology program.
Dr. Qayad worked in Pakistan and Afghanistan for 2 years on the team working to eradicate Polio under the WHO and Taskforce for Global Health. In this role, he led the epidemiological data analysis of Polio data in both countries and supported the Global health security agenda in Pakistan.
He has also mentored students in the advanced Field Epidemiology Program (FETP) in Yemen, and Frontline FETP in Gambia and Somalia. He has mentored undergraduate and graduate public health students at in Amoud University, Somaliland for over 2 years. In 1987-1989, he was an assistant professor in the department of community medicine, faculty of medicine, Mogadishu, Somalia.
He has previously worked with CDC, Lousiana Department of Health and Hospitals, World Health Organization and the Gates Foundation. He is currently working as a freelance public health consultant.
Dr. Qayad holds several degrees; an MD from Somalia National University, Mogadishu, MSc from University of Khartoum, Sudan, MPH and MSPH from Tulane University, New Orleans, and a PhD from University of Rome-La Sapienza, Italy.
