University of Georgia College of Public Health professor Andreas Handel has been appointed to the UGA Foundation Endowed Professorship in Public Health.
Handel started his career at UGA as an assistant professor in January 2009 is currently a full professor and associate department head in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
“Dr. Handel’s exceptional achievements as a researcher and educator, his renowned status both nationally and internationally in the field of epidemiology and biostatistics, his significant contributions to public health research and policy, and his unwavering commitment to guiding and nurturing the future generation of public health researchers and practitioners all highlight why he is an ideal candidate for this professorship,” said Dean Marsha Davis.
Handel is internationally recognized for his research, which is at the forefront of data analytics and modeling of infectious diseases.
“Infectious diseases continue to pose a significant threat, and my research aims to enhance our ability to control their impact for pathogens such as influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and others,” Handel said. “This endowment will enable me to continue and expand my efforts to combat infectious diseases and protect public health.”
During his time at UGA, Handel has consistently received research funding, including serval NIH grants for projects on population-level and within-host modeling of influenza and norovirus. Through this funding, Handel has also supported several PhD, MPH and undergraduate students at the university.
“Through my teaching and service, I work to train the next generation of public health professionals, equipping them with strong quantitative and analytical skills to maximize their effectiveness in improving human health,” Handel said.
The University of Georgia Foundation funds more than 150 chairs and professorships across a wide variety of departments and disciplines at the university. Funding for these chairs and professorships is made possible through the generosity of donors, who establish funds with the foundation to support these important positions.
