The College of Public Health offers students unique study abroad opportunities developed to provide life-changing international experiences in public health. These programs are geared towards public health students and offers both course credit while providing a broadened prospective on global health. Programs are led by College of Public Health faculty during Maymester and/or summer semesters.

Programs
Comparative Health Systems of the World in Thailand
Program Dates: May 17 – May 31, 2024

This Maymester study abroad experience will provide students with the opportunity to explore healthcare through a comparative lens, by comparing and contrasting healthcare systems of Canada, UK, Singapore and Thailand with the U.S. healthcare system. Students will visit three areas in Thailand to explore the history of the development of healthcare in Thailand, how the healthcare system has evolved over time, the role of government in healthcare, the relationship between culture and health. The visits will also students to better understand how health policies can affect universal health coverage, equity and efficiency of health systems. Students will be immersed in the different challenges and solutions to healthcare in different countries, including healthcare delivery, organization models, funding models, workforce issues, and outcomes. The in-depth view of country experiences will be provided through classroom discussion, guest lectures from healthcare professionals, and site visits to healthcare facilities and policy making institutions in Thailand.

Study Abroad in Japan
Program Dates: July 7 – July 27 (tentative)
Application Deadline: February 15, 2024 (Rolling Admission)
Join the UGA College of Public Health and its Department of Health Promotion and Behavior for a Summer Session in Japan that focuses on international public health issues, such as aging, environmental problems, community health, and chronic and infectious disease.
Academic Program
Each student must register for 2 courses (6 credit hours). All classes will be conducted in English. Participants will travel and participate in classroom lectures and service learning opportunities with faculty and students from Shizuoka University of Art and Culture in Kosai City near Hamamatsu, Japan. Students will also participate in home stays in Shizuoka Prefecture. We will also visit the Hiroshima Peace Museum, Miyajima Island, and Nara.
Please note, the program is physically challenging and may not be suitable for all students.

Program Fee: $2,500 (approximately)
The fee includes:
- Program Deposit (due after acceptance to program) – applied towards total program cost

NOTE: This fee does not include tuition, airfare ($1,800 estimated), rail transportation ($575 for JR pass), most meals, and spending money. Global Health in Uganda
NOTE: Due to current restrictions, this program is not running in 2024.

Join the UGA College of Public Health and its Global Health Institute for a Summer Session in Uganda that examines two global health problems—HIV/AIDS and Maternal and Child Health (MCH)—that currently impact health, society and culture in Uganda.
Academic Program
The program courses include traditional classroom instruction, guest lectures by Ugandan clinicians and researchers, observing/shadowing in both clinical and research activities, and participating in service-learning projects in collaboration with local organizations providing HIV/AIDS care and preventive services.
The program takes place under the auspices of Makerere University, a public institution with longstanding partnership and research collaborations with UGA and the Global Health Institute. Students will visit and observe at a university research institute, two different hospitals, public health clinics, and a community-based organization that supports pregnant adolescents. Through experiential learning and traditional classroom instruction, students can explore significant developments and achievements in both HIV/AIDS control and improving MCH in Uganda over the past 40 years.
