Public health professionals gathered both online and in person for the 2021 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Expo in Denver, Colorado, October 24-27. Faculty and students from the UGA College of Public Health joined to share their research and outlooks on how we can “create the healthiest nation.”

College Faculty Presentations at APHA 2021

Zhuo “Adam” Chen, associate professor of health policy & management, presented a poster, Narrowing but persistent gender pay gap among employees of the US department of health and human services during 2010-2018, as a part of the Health Administration program.

Rifat Haider, assistant professor of health policy & management, presented three posters:

• Application of big data analytics to predict drug use transition to injection route in Ohio.
• Inequalities in undiagnosed hypertension among reproductive age women in Bangladesh: Evidence from a nationally representative survey.
• Prevalence and determinants of undiagnosed hypertension among people living with HIV in South Africa.

He was a co-author on two oral presentations.

Pamela Orpinas, professor of health promotion & behavior, gave an oral presentation, Prevention of intimate partner violence: Impact of a virtual case simulation training for religious leaders, as part of the Family Violence Prevention program.

Chrissy Proctor, assistant professor of health promotion & behavior, presented two posters and an oral presentation in Denver.

• You said what in that press release? Using a John Oliver episode to teach undergraduates ethical threats in public health was presented as part of the Ethics program.
• School connection during a pandemic: Virtual connection improves online learning and resilience, and
• Disparities in caretaking burdens and effective online learning during the covid-19 pandemic were virtual posters presented as part of the School Health and Wellness program.

Donglan “Stacy” Zhang, associate professor of health policy & management, presented an oral presentation, Utilization of antihypertensive drugs and Alzheimers’ disease and related dementia (ADRD) among hypertension patients, as part of the Aging & Public Health session.

Rachel McCardel, a PhD student in health promotion & behavior, presented a poster, An evaluation of Fifty + Fit: A worksite wellness program designed to increase physical activity among the aging workforce.
